CBS' Kaplan Says Tiger's Injury "Of Major Importance"

Arch Stanton

Gosh. How far beyond pathetic farce are these guys going to go? Remember folks: always aim for the next level--downward.

In the meantime we have Lee Abrams, Chief Innovation Officer for the Tribune Company, saying he wants newspapers to be more like TeeVee. Ugh.

Shorter Rick Kaplan, Executive Producer of CBS Evening News:

An injured American sports star is more important news than an injured or dead American soldier.

I am afraid Kaplan thinks that the folks who watch TV news don't want to see this other stuff. I am even more afraid that he could be right.

Only someone that actually cares about you, would tell you that which you did not want to hear.

Or also something that you really did want to hear.

For example: one of the news items missed was:

"Man with deadly skin cancer saved by new treatment."

I came across this same news item while searching another topic on the Scientific American website.

It certainly grabbed my attention. One of my daughters is in the terminal stage of cancer and the article provided a ray of hope and a long-shot opportunity for follow-up.

Real information for me and thousands of other people, I would think.

Ah, yes! I forget!

I would THINK, therefore I might BE.
I don't watch TV. But TV watches ME.

Tim Russert, Great Family Everyman, A Kid From Buffalo, an Inspiration To Us All--which syrupy canonization is slupped up by all the Facebook millions who saw his pixelated image on TV as that of a beloved personal friend.

Viewed through that lens, doting on Tiger Woods makes sense. Don't millions think of him as someone they know well, a welcome guest in the home, happy to see his thousand-watt smile that lights up a room, etc., etc?

This sort of false sense of identification with a TV image is what television is selling, and they do it SO well. The only thing to do is STOP WATCHING.

there was no need for this. i am unsure what they were trying to do.

I thought they were talking about tiger woods

Indeed, I am afraid Kaplan thinks that the folks who watch TV news don't want to see this other stuff.
