Concerning Bush's push to alter Article III of the Geneva Conventions, Keith Olbermann addresses the 800-pound gorilla in the room that most in the mainstream media refuse to mention: it's about saving their own "backsides." As discussed here over the last couple of weeks, if Bush's proposed legislation were made into law, it would go into effect retroactively, preventing any member of his administration from being charged with past war crimes, such as waterboarding.
All of Bush's nonsense about "clarity" is merely a smokescreen. His administration already committed the crime; they just don't want to pay the time. In this way, it's similar to their efforts to rewrite FISA laws. They broke them, so they decided they must be changed in order to circumvent criminal charges.
This current despotic legislation is nothing less than their escape route.

Yes, the entire issue is about protecting their 'ass' but in a larger context, EVERYTHING is -Specifically, I'm talking about the need to portray the Dems as 'weak' on national security - this issue was designed to cast the Dems into the role of obstructionists, so that later, in November, this would be another issue where the Dems were 'weak' on security - that is the excuse Bush uses for these practices - as necessary to 'protect the American people' - If we take this strategy further, Bush has met with a group of generals to discuss military options with Iran - he even went so far as to sugest 'tactical' nuclear - the generals strongly disagreed, sayng that any kind of bombing of Iran would be ineffectual - But Bush will continue to push this idea, not because it makes sense militarily, or diplomatically, but because in November, it may be necessary - Bombing Iran will help the Repubs stay in power in Congress - Because bottom line that is the major concern of Bush and his gang - If the Dems take even one house there will be investigations - probably not impeachment, though he deserves it, but investigations into the fake intelligience, Haliburton graft, katrina, yellow cake, the list goes on -His proposed 'agenda' for the last two years is not important - the tax cut, supreme court, other appointments, are enough payback to the gang that got him in - Now, like any rat, Bus, Cheney, Rove,Rumsfeld - they're all concerned with their own corrupt, cowardly, brutal asses.
